REACH: The new challenge

REACH is a new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use, which entered into force on 1 June 2007. It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances

The REACH Regulation gives greater responsibility to industry, to manage risks from chemicals as well as provide safety information on the substances used in their products. Manufacturers and importers will now be required to gather information on the properties of chemical substances used in their products, which will allow their safe handling, and to register the information in a central database run by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki.

The manufacturer or importer now faces the daunting task of reporting on up to 30,000 chemical substances that may be contained in products they import or sell in the EU. Companies have realized by now that REACH compliance initiatives will place tremendous demands on their supply chain, engineering and compliance management groups.
